Dr. Teresa J. Vietti Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Pediatric Oncology Research
Dr. Teresa J. Vietti has published more than 200 medical articles

SAINT LOUIS, MO, August 11, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Teresa J. Vietti, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Pediatrics and Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in pediatric oncology research.

Dr. Teresa Vietti brings more than five decades of experience to the research and treatment of childhood cancers. Throughout her career, she has consistently dedicated herself to discovering new and effective methods of battling the crippling disease in children and adults while remaining abreast of developing technologies. Alleviating the problem of childhood cancer was at first a difficult task, recalls Dr. Vietti, as she reflects on her early experience. "I had very little training in oncology" - the branch of pathology that studies the various types of diseases that cause cancer. But because the most common childhood cancers are of the blood, she was able to apply her expertise in childhood oncology without formal training. In addition to her significant research contributions, she has published more than 200 articles in medical journals, co-edited a textbook on pediatric oncology, and authored and co-authored many abstracts and book chapters.

In 1949, Dr. Vietti received a bachelor of arts from Rice University, and in 1953 she received a doctor of medicine from Baylor University. She also received training in pediatrics at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Dr. Vietti is a member of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Pediatric Society, the American Association for Cancer Research and the International Society of Hematology. For her excellence in the field of oncology, Dr. Vietti has received various prestigious awards including the for lifetime achievement from the Academy of Science in St. Louis, the UNICO Award, the Distinguished Career Award from The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Spirit of Health Award from the American Cancer Society and the 21st Century Award as Top Medical Scientist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
