Best-selling Author and Motivational Speaker Ernesto Caravantes Says Michael Jackson's Death Should be a Wake-up Call for Youth

July 12, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Best-selling Author and Motivational Speaker Ernesto Caravantes says icons like the late Michael Jackson have a considerably strong sway over the impressionable minds of students and adolescents, who look up to these icons as role models, or at least people they admire on a heartfelt level. He says Jackson's death comes with a huge lesson for youngsters who think they can make it without the strong foundation of education.

"One of the obvious notations is that Michael Jackson was admired for his musical talent, "says Caravantes. "There is nothing wrong with that. What does concern me, as an educator, is that there are so many young people who look up to these icons and feel that they can also match the level of meteoric success that these icons managed to attain. Not every boy who can dribble a basketball can grow up to be Michael Jordan, and not every girl who belt out a tune can become the next Madonna."

Caravantes says because the world is much more crowded now than it was several generations back, not everyone will be able to attain those few top spots at the mountain's peak. Most of us will be able to attain a reasonable level of success, but even that is becoming more and more difficult to obtain under the current economic climate. "Youngsters who feel that they can attain the level of success of Jordan or Jackson without completing their education are only deluding themselves."

What's worse, Caravantes says is these students do not have anyone close to them to give them the proper guidance. Many of these youths hail from the ghettos and barrios of our inner cities and feel that school has little relevance to the "real world" that exists "out there" and so they stop trying. There is nothing wrong with trying to become a musical icon, but the youths of today must have their education to fall back on in case they don't make it in the musical or athletic world.

Everyone knows that many athletes in some sports are washed out passed the age of about 30. With about half a century of life left to live, they must find ways to work and survive. The musical world is also equally precarious. There have been countless "flash in the pans" that were famous for about one or two years, only to fade into oblivion. What's even worse is that many times these pop icons were too young to handle the success and money and they blew it all (or, should I say inhale it all) on drugs.

"Education is no guarantor of success either, but if young people are able to at least complete their college education, they can have a safety net in case they fall back while pursuing their dreams," adds the motivational speaker.
